The Australian Fabian newsletter is entitled Equality ...

As someone vaguely romantic about the French revolution where the assembly ended up debating a declaration of the rights of man and liberty equality fraternity were proclaimed as a trio of foundational values ... I know the sisterhood have a problem with the male centric rhetoric of 1789 ... I just think we need liberty and equality and a sense of community not just equality in a pluralism of value criteria ...

But then I identify more as a right wing social democrat than as a Marxist ...Andrew Oliverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15793564499336784368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952277586613848648.post-62026470913496962482018-04-20T06:09:49.442-07:002018-04-20T06:09:49.442-07:00Tristan, the problem I have with Corbyn is that in...Tristan, the problem I have with Corbyn is that in the command/control socialistic/interventionist social/democratic, etc. policies I agree with he doesn't seem to support, and the ones he does support, I don't particularly support. For example (at least in the Australian context), I don't see free education as a particular important concern. Maybe once universities are enfranchised with the poor and not the wealthy middle class maybe there's a case. With public ownership of the railways — well I don't see that as being necessarily good here in Australia, although I do know it's a different case in the UK, with their own concerns. And then there's just spending on essential services which old Blairite Labour did as well.

But I find Corbyn avoids the politicised issues like tariffs and trade policy, and finance. Sure the investment bank and regional banks are good ideas, but there's little innovation or reform of the financial sector at large, or any attacks on them. You could say even Bill Shorten is more radical on finance than he is.

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14428876537471444047noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952277586613848648.post-66377972697170127152018-04-20T03:06:07.426-07:002018-04-20T03:06:07.426-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Kaashvi mohanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12270884780050347016noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952277586613848648.post-79460067183469340752018-04-20T01:40:07.026-07:002018-04-20T01:40:07.026-07:00Thanks Don and Marcus ; I appreciate your comments...Thanks Don and Marcus ; I appreciate your comments ; though I think it is implied in a 'co-operatives with state aid' agenda that there are problems with exploitation. And that can be read into arguments to extend the public sector also. The concern is whether there is really any way out ; or if for now we can only mitigate and make strategic inroads. There's also the question whether some of the old answers are really the best way forward also.Vaughann722https://www.blogger.com/profile/11604027151490275320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952277586613848648.post-31537064079798785182018-04-19T00:23:54.678-07:002018-04-19T00:23:54.678-07:00I agree with the core message of this intelligent ...I agree with the core message of this intelligent left Keynesian approach to defending Corbynism: “Marxism should not be seen as an ‘Ideological bogeyman’ ; especially where terms like ‘cultural Marxism’ are thrown around with abandon – but where few people understand what Marxism really means anymore. “ And also there is a lot of detail that makes sense in support of that. However, there are serious problems also. Most serious is its failure to take hold of the core of Marx’ analysis of capitalism and how it works: namely, profiteering / profitability as the driving force of the system and within that the systemic exploitation of working people, and of nature. Unlike the contemporary left’s strong grasp of discrimination in capitalism, its understanding of exploitation is quite poor. Yet Marx’ grasp of how exploitation works is as relevant today, in this / “our” 21st century capitalism, as it was in the nineteenth century. Much of strategic, policy and tactical significance flows from this.Don Sutherlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11474108524010639953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5952277586613848648.post-89051585188762630982018-04-18T21:50:11.896-07:002018-04-18T21:50:11.896-07:00Nicely argued!
